During a recent appearance on “What America’s Thinking,” Democratic pollster Nancy Zdunkewicz said white people tend to “overreport” the notion that they now fit into a “minority” category of Americans.
“There’s definitely an increase in white and Republican voters saying that they feel like they are now a minority, and a minority that is, in fact, discriminated against,” Zdunkewicz, the managing director at Democracy Corps, told the Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on Monday.

She added that in some parts of the U.S. white Americans feel they are already a minority as the nation has become increasingly diverse over the years. Recent reports showing that the white population is expected to shrink in the coming decades has only fueled fears of a so-called white minority.
For example, the 2018 Census showed that the non-Hispanic white population is on the decline, and that less than half of all children in the U.S. will be non-Hispanic whites by 2020. The report also noted that the population of those who identify as “two or more races” is projected to be the fastest-growing group, followed by single-race Asians and Hispanics of any race.
“We’ve seen that many of the questions that you can ask around these sort of issues of ‘are you already a minority?’ and ‘are whites discriminated against?’ are highly correlated with racist attitudes, and not shockingly perhaps, voting for Donald Trump,” Zdunkewicz added.
A 2018 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences drew a similar conclusion, finding that white Christian males cast their ballot for Trump because they felt their superior status in society was at risk, The Hill reported.
