An unnamed man in his 60s was arrested earlier this week after London authorities say he posted video of himself following a group a Muslim schoolgirls on the street and calling for them to be sterilized.
The “shocking” video, which was filmed outside the Central Foundation Girls’ School in Bow, East London, was brought to the attention of London Metropolitan Police, who then tracked him down and took him into custody, The Independent reported.
The man has since been charged with suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense. In a statement, police said he was taken to an east London police station, where he “currently remains in custody.”
In the clip, the man is heard mumbling racist abuse about the schoolgirls, who were wearing head coverings as they left school that day. The man proceeds to follow the students down the street, calling them “black c–ts” who are “going to breed like “f—–g rats.”
“We’re going to be f—ed with this lot,” he continues. “I think what we might have to do is think of something like old [Nazi] Dr. Josef Mengele […] so the c–s can’t f—-ing multiply.”
According to the Independent, the girls in the video were unaware of the man’s presence and did not report the racist abuse.
The mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, and Councilor Asma Begum denounced the man’s offensive rhetoric and has offered support to the students and their school.
“We condemn the use of this inflammatory rhetoric,” the pair said in a joint statement. “Tower Hamlets is home to people from all over the world and we are proud of our history which has been enriched by migration.”
Video of the incident, which has been widely circulated on social media, also sparked angry reaction among online users.
“Please tell me: Why on earth would this person ever be released from prison? He is a threat to himself and others and needs to be locked up forever,” one Twitter user wrote.
“What’s worse, being surprised by something like this, or not being surprised by something like this?” another user chimed in.
Press TV reports that hate crimes against Muslims have been on rise in the UK, with many women suffering harassment over their hijabs and other head coverings. The news site states that Muslim women in cities like Manchester have been specifically targeted since a May 2017 terror attack in the city left 22 people dead.
