Ohio Police Salute Two Men Who Jumped Into Action to Help Save an Unconscious Woman and Her 3-Year-Old Daughter

Two Ohio men are being deemed local heroes by officers after assisting a mother and her 3-year-old daughter on Sunday evening.

“I’m blessed. God is so good,” 42-year-old Latonya Perry told News 5 Cleveland.

Rayfield Hallman and Steven William Wood were driving through Maple Heights, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, on Dec. 23 when they spotted Perry lying in her doorway with her 3-year-old daughter nearby.

Hallman said he almost kept on driving, but was concerned for the child who was outside in the 36-degree weather.

“I was talking on the phone and I was like, man, this doesn’t look too good,” Hallman told WEWS. “I ended up pulling back and tried to communicate with her through my car, but I didn’t get a response at all.”

The two men approached Perry, who was semi-conscious, and her toddler. The 3-year-old was awakened by Wood and Hallman, who asked her if she was OK. The child responded, “My mommy, my mommy.”

The two cousins waited for paramedics to arrive on the scene and placed the toddler inside their car to got her out of the cold. They also grabbed Perry’s poodle, which was outside with her.

First responders determined that the victim had suffered a seizure and transported her to Marymount Hospital. Perry returned home on Dec. 26 after being treated.

“You always hear about bad stuff about our young Black men. To see that our young Black men are doing something good out there, it’s so great,” Perry told the news source.

The victim also thanked the good Samaritans by phone for helping her and her daughter. She told them, “You saved my life.”

Hallman responded, “I’m just glad I was just able to recognize the situation and be a blessing to your life. … I’m glad you’re OK.”

Maple Heights Police Department rewarded both Wood and Hallman with two restaurant gift cards for “showing everyone else that compassion for our fellow man is still an applicable characteristic in our world.”

Officers also highlighted the two heroes on their Facebook page.

“Rayfield and Steven’s decision to show concern for another person probably saved not only the woman’s life, but possibly saved the life of her daughter,” MHPD wrote. “I’m sure that other people drove past and decided not to do anything, but because Rayfield and Steven decided to show a high level of character and compassion, the woman, her daughter and her dog should be fine.”

Perry said the men helping to save her and her daughter’s lives was the greatest Christmas gift she received.
