British race car driver Lewis Hamilton ignited controversy Tuesday, Dec. 26 after slamming his young nephew for wearing a princess dress. The Formula One competitor’s family member was giddy over his gift, but his uncle didn’t share the same enthusiasm.
“I’m so sad right now,” Hamilton says on Instagram Live Monday, Dec. 25. “Why are you wearing a princess dress? Is this what you got for Christmas?”
When his nephew responds with an eager nod, Hamilton exclaims, “Boys don’t wear princess dresses!”
The clip has since been removed due to his “inappropriate” words and the driver issued an apology Tuesday, Dec. 26.
“I was playing around with my nephew … I meant no harm and did not mean to offend anyone at all. I love that my nephew feels free to express himself as we all should.”
“I have always been in support of anyone living their life exactly how they wish and I hope I can be forgiven for this lapse in judgment,” he added in a follow-up post.
But the criticism had already begun.

However, some didn’t particularly take issue with Hamilton’s stance.

My son can grow up wearing whatever he likes, although I'll put my foot down if he wants to dress like Lewis Hamilton https://t.co/7Bz5AMOOYR
