Police Investigating If Noose Drawing of Student Can Be Classified as Hate Crime

Los Angeles Police are investigating whether a noose drawing of a local high school student can be classified as a hate crime, as the teen’s family calls for the expulsion of those responsible.

Aina Adewunmi, a 15-year-old Palisades Charter High School transfer student, was depicted in a racist image with a noose drawn around her neck, according to Los Angles ABC television affiliate ABC 7. It was accompanied by a stock photo of a white woman looking at a noosee

“I think Pali is a good school. I’m happy I moved and I won’t be leaving, but this is something that needs to be stopped because it has happened in the past,” said Adewunmi, who found the image after it was posted in a chemistry chat room in May and immediately reported it to administrators. “I knew if I didn’t come out with this story, it would happen over and over again.”

The three boys who posted the image were suspended but Adewunmi’s family wants more to be done. They have hired a lawyer and want the boys, who have apologized for the photo, to be expelled.

This is the second racist incident at Palisades Charter. Pacific Palisades Patch reported that police arrested and charged students in 2016 for tagging the campus with swastikas and references to the KKK and homosexuals.
