6 Successful Farms Promoting the Resurgence of Black Agrarians

Hattie Carthan Herban Farm In Brooklyn, N.Y.:
The Hattie Carthan Herban Farm, established in 2009, teaches food justice, social activism and community building. In 2013, the farm produced over 9,000 pounds of nutrient-dense foods, disbursed 520 dozen eggs to community residents and served 81 families via its weekly market basket program.

With the help of community volunteers, Guyana native Yonette Fleming transformed a parcel of blighted property into a thriving urban farm that not only serves as a naturally grown food source but also as a place of physical and spiritual healing. Fleming, a trained priestess, has created “healing rituals that incorporate drumming, farm-grown herbal medicine, ancestor reverence, building of traditional clay ovens, and artisanal bread baking,” Yes! Magazine reported.
