6 Successful Farms Promoting the Resurgence of Black Agrarians

Soul Fire Farm in Petersburg, N.Y.:
With its sustainable growing practices, the 72-acre Soul Fire Farm feeds 80 families per week, all while teaching skills on natural building, community self-determination and environmental activism. The farm grows crops for its Ujaama (or cooperative economics) farm share, which includes 60 different types of vegetables, herbs, eggs and pastured poultry.

The Soul Fire Farm is a green space committed to training “the next generation of Black and Brown activist-farmers by passing on [African] Diasporic farming practices, working through land-based trauma, and finding our personal leverage points in the movements for Black land sovereignty,” a farm member said in an emailed statement. The farm earned $246,065 in profits during the 2016 fiscal year.
