Africa’s first private satellite will launch in May 2017, thanks to the work of 14 incredibly smart South African girls.
The team of girls participated in the Meta Economic Development Organisation (MEDO) Space program last year, where they built a high-tech payload for the satellite, according to Business Insider.
Next year, the satellite’s payload will send detailed thermal information predicting natural disasters and monitoring weather patterns. It also will be used to improve food security in the region.
Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green Tackles Cancer Head On

Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, an assistant professor at the Morehouse School of Medicine, was awarded a $1.1 million grant from the the VA Office of Research and Development to work on technology that will target, image and treat cancer.

Green’s groundbreaking 3-in-1 system utilizes lasers to treat cancer cells without damaging healthy nearby cells. Since January, Green has received national acclaim for her system’s early detection, imaging, targeting and selective treatment of head and neck cancers. The 10-minute laser-activated nanoparticle treatment is reported to reduce tumors by 100 percent.
