Harold Varner III (above), a Black man who plays on the Web.com tour — a feeder system that leads to the PGA Tour — said to the Columbus Dispatch: “I know (golf) needs to change, but it’s not capable … but not because of (racism). It’s way easier for a kid in the streets to go to the basketball court. He can keep his lunch money and go play outside for free. He goes to the golf course and spends $30, that’s his lunch for the whole week.” Some courses are even cheaper, but it still is cost-prohibitive to many. Clubs alone, not to mention golf shirts, balls, etc., make for a true financial commitment that can be daunting if not correctly budgeted.
