In Washington state, a security camera captured King County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Paul Schene kicking a 15-year-old Malika Calhoun in her stomach, smashing her head against a corner wall before flinging her to the floor by her hair. He then squatted down on her and made “two overhead strikes” to what appeared to be the facial area. After two hung juries failed to reach a verdict in a criminal trial, all charges against Schene were dropped.

Oscar Grant, 22, was lying face down with his hands behind his back, subdued by another police officer, when Oakland, California, transit police officer Johannes Mehserle shot and killed him. Mehserle spent 11 months in jail for involuntary manslaughter.

Robert Mitchell — April 10, 2009

Robert Mitchell, a 16-year-old from Detroit, was tragically killed by police who used a Taser gun to fire 50,000 volts of electricity into him after a routine traffic stop. Mitchell, who was a passenger in his cousin’s car, ran from police into an abandoned house. Police defended their use of the nonlethal weapon, saying the 110-pound teen was resisting an arrest.
