Nationally, almost 30 percent of the workforce is unemployed. But for Black South Africans the unemployment rate increased from 23 percent in 1991 to 48 percent in 2002. Unemployment is mainly concentrated among unskilled Blacks, who comprise 90 percent of the unemployed.
The ANC government has pledged to cut overall unemployment to 14 percent by 2014, but so far, efforts have not caused dramatic drops in unemployment.
Black Pilots Severely Underrepresented
Currently, 85 percent of South African Airways pilots are white, of which 7.6 percent are white females. Fifteen percent of SAA pilots are Black, that is, African, Colored [mixed race people] and Indian.
