In 2008, Def Jam Records Executive Vice President Shakir Stewart, 34, committed suicide in his Atlanta home. His reasons for the suicide was unclear, though friends stated that he had been behaving strangely in the days leading up to his death.

His fiancée, Michelle Rivers, told Rolling Stone magazine that she felt he was “in deep pain and largely suffering in silence.”
