Rihanna’s career has come a long way since she first burst on the scene at 16 with her  hit single “Pon De Replay.”  Today, Rihanna is one of the biggest artists in the world  and was recognized for her illustrious career last night at the American Music Awards as she was presented with the “American Icon” award. As reported by rap-up.com:

“180 million singles and 50 million albums later, Rihanna received the first-ever Icon Award at the 2013 American Music Awards on Sunday. RiRi’s mother Monica Fenty presented her daughter with the award. ‘I know the journey and your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused,’ she said.

During the acceptance speech, Rihanna thanked L.A. Reid, her family, her glam team, and her fans. ‘Right now, I can’t believe that at 25 years old, I’m holding an Icon Award,’ she said. ‘That is weird to even say out loud.'”

Before accepting the award, Rihanna hit the AMA stage to perform her smash single “Diamonds.” According to vibe.com:

“Rihanna’s 2013 has been a mixture of ups (sold out Diamonds world tour, “Pour It Up” music video and slew of No. 1 hits) and downs (777 tour, on-and-off again relationship with Chris Brown). But her performance at the 2013 American Music Awards was definitely on the upside.

Rihanna performed her hit ‘Diamonds’ off Unapologetic at Sunday’s music awards show. Her time on stage was tame, with her opting for a long black gown and slicked back up-do.”

Rihanna also took home an AMA for “Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist.”
