A homeless Boston man who turned in a bag filled with money, is reaping rewards for his good deed.

His name is Glen James and according to reports in the Boston media, James was “shocked” that a simple good deed could change the course of his life.

James was in a Boston mall last month when he came across a bag filled with a passport, $2,400 in cash and nearly $40,000 in traveler’s checks. He immediately turned the bag in to police so that it could be returned to its rightful owner, the Boston Herald reported.

That was just the beginning of his tale.

After Boston police honored James with a special citation, Ethan Whittington, a complete stranger in Midlothian, Va., was so moved by James’ story that he decided to set up an online fundraising campaign.

As of press time, the fund has raised more than $157,000, with a goal of raising $250,000.

This is what Whittington wrote in his appeal at gofundme.com:

“A homeless man by the name of Glen James found $40,000 yesterday and promptly returned the backpack with all of its contents. Lets all chip in and help this man change his life. Every little donation helps. Lets be reassured that there is still hope and humanity in our great nation.”

Last week James met Whittington for the first time. The two men thanked the other for their selflessness and inspiration, according to USA Today.

Now supporters are also working to get James a new home near his sister.

“This is a total surprise and shock to me that it has gone this far,” he told USA Today.
