Nick Foles will also play with the first string, and coach Chip Kelly said the second-year player will start the second preseason game. Kelly said in order to get a fair assessment, Vick and Foles will have to play equally. Both quarterbacks are slated to get about 12 and 20 snaps against the Patriots.
“I can’t read into it,” Vick said of the start, according to The Philadelphia Daily News. “Coach, all he told us is that I’m going to start, but it won’t be the same next week. So you’ve got to take it for what it’s worth and keep moving.”
Foles said, “We’re cool with it,” when asked about Vick getting the start. “We’re ready to go, we’re ready to go after it,” he added.
Since first-year coach Kelly arrived at the Philadelphia Eagles, the two quarterbacks have been competing for the No. 1 job.
Kelly made the announcement Thursday, saying it had nothing to do with evaluations or performance in training camp so far.
“It was Mike’s day in the rotation, that was the easiest way for us to do it and then we’ll make sure the rotation works out that Nick will get the start next week,” Kelly said. “The two of those guys, we feel like we’ve got it balanced out. We met with those guys this morning; they were great with it, so that’s kind of our plan going in.”
