’42’ Smashes Record, While ‘Scary Movie 5’ Hardly Spooks Anyone

Chadwick Boseman’s 42 easily takes this weekend box office title, while Scary Movie 5 proves that not all films are worth the money it takes to make it.

The Jackie Robinson biopic made history opening to an estimate $9.1 million on Friday then jumping up to $11.1 million on Saturday. After the three day weekend and all the ticket sales have been tallied, the film will easily make over $27 million. After that feat, 42 will have the best opening weekend for a baseball movie ever made in history. Audiences gave the film an A+ CinemaScore, which means through word of mouth, films earning power will reach far past opening weekend.

Scary Movie 5 was no match for 42 and only earned $5.5 million in its debut weekend, making it the lowest opening in the comedy horror franchise. After the three-day weekend, the film is projected to make an unimpressive $13 million.
