The Bling Ring gang supposedly robbed celebrity houses because they lusted after fame, and, well, now there’s a movie about them. So… well played, teenage criminals. The gang of seven high schoolers burglarized $3 million worth of clothes and jewelry between 2008 and 2009. The Bling Ring’s rich and famous targets included Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Megan Fox, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Bilson, and more. They used the Internet to locate the homes, and to find out when the celebrities would be away, and then entered the homes with surprising ease (Hilton’s front door was unlocked the first time the group broke in).
Eventually, police caught up to the gang, with some of the members getting jail time. Their story has already been adapted for a Lifetime Channel movie, but this one is the big leagues. It’s directed by Sofia Coppola, who excels and portraying the empty glitz of the rich in a compelling way, and it stars Emma Watson as a character based on Alexis Neiers, who claimed to only be an unwitting participant in one of the crimes, and who subsequently got herself a reality TV show on E!. Crime pays, people.
The Bling Ring comes out June 14th. View the trailer below…
