Director Craig Brewer is moving from the deep-fried sensibilities of the South to the seedy underbelly of LA. He’s been attached to write and direct The Gangster Princess of Beverly Hills, a movie adaptation of a true story, based on an article that ran in Rolling Stone last year.
But first, read the article itself. It’s absolutely riveting. Lisette Lee infiltrated Hollywood social circles by claiming to be a K-Pop star and heiress to the Samsung fortune. She called herself “the Korean Paris Hilton.” Except she was actually a drug runner who smuggled 7,000 pounds of marijuana from California to Ohio over the course of eight months. Holy cow.
This is perfect material for Brewer. Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan are both spectacularly seedy, and this story is as seedy as it gets. No word on when The Gangster Princess of Beverly Hills will come out, but I’m already eagerly anticipating it.
