Writer Defends Depicting Michelle Obama As A Slave On Magazine

Michelle Obama Slave Photo – The Obamas have not had an easy time in the White House and with their first term nearing an end – with hopes of a second – first lady Michelle Obama is embroiled in a heated debate over her superimposed head on the body of a slave.

Magazine de Fuera de Serie, a Spanish periodical, has caused quite a stir with its decision to feature artwork showing Mrs. Obama as a semi-nude African slave on the cover of its latest issue.

Obama’s face sits on the top of a African-Guadeloupean female slave with the accompanying article entitled “Michelle Granddaughter of a Slave, Lady of America,” written by Karine Percheron-Daniels. The original artwork was completed by French painter Marie-Guillemine Benoist.

The painting was meant to symbolize emancipation and empowerment. Not surprisingly Karine’s effort at being artsy was a failed attempt.

Althea Legal-Miller at Clutch Magazine wrote, “Let’s be clear. This image has nothing to do with acknowledging Obama’s enslaved foremothers, and everything to do with reinforcing and extending the historical denial of black women’s individuality and agency.”

One commenter added,

“Why is it ok to denigrate the Obamas? I mean when you had Bush in office it was all “respect the office of the president” but now it seems that Obama is fair game and no one comes to the same defense. I think its sick stuff to put the First Lady”s head on that of a slave. Sick and racist. What do you expect of Europeans.”

And Karine’s take on Michelle Obama’s slave image? She would “love” it.
