Weekend Box Office Report: 'The Expendables 2' Tops All With $28.7 Million

As the summer is coming to the end, one of the last action movies to hit the big screen, catering to the testosterone filled audience, just completed its first weekend out.

Lionsgate’s The Expendables 2, starring Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, was enough man-meat to earn an estimated $28.7 million in 3,316 theaters. That’s good, but not better than the original which opened up to $34.8 million two years earlier. Critics took honest jabs to the flick, which co-stars Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, Jet Li, Nan Yu, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews and Randy Couture, saying that the film was unnecessary and cheesy.

The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz, held on to the second spot. The Universal franchise revival fell short of its predecessors, but acquire a hefty weekend with $17 million for a grand total of $69.6 million.

ParaNorman surprised many by coming in the third spot. Featuring voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck, John Goodman, Leslie Mann and Christopher Mintz-Plassed, the film opened up on Friday were it raked in $14 million. ParaNorman scored a B+ CinemaScore from moviegoers.
