Think Like A Man is still sitting at the top of the U.S. box office since being released almost two weeks ago but Marvel’s The Avengers is set to take its place. Think Like A Man has made a total of $61.7 million, a surprising figure for a movie with a predominantly African-American cast. Some movie buffs think that could be attributed to underwhelming openings for movies like The Five-Year Engagement and The Raven.
The Avengers has been released internationally and has already grossed $218 million. The film will not be released in the United States until Friday, but it is already projected to gross between $500 and $600 million dollars when it’s done. Pre-release tracking predicts opening numbers in North America to be around $150 million.
The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon and with an all-star cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Jr., as General Fury, joins a long line of successful superhero movies released by Marvel. Three of the heroes featured in the film, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, have all had their own feature films. Iron Man and Iron Man 2 earned $585 and $623 million, respectively; Thor earned $449.3 million last summer; and Captain America: The First Avenger earned $368.6 million.
