Azealia Banks Called Out by GLAAD for Anti-Gay Slur

Azealia Banks is not being dropped from Interscope despite the rumors to that affect after her use of an anti-gay slur on Twitter directed at blogger Perez Hilton, reports Clash.

Here’s how they say things ultimately got ugly:

The past week has been a dramatic time for Azealia Banks. Even by her own standards, a Twitter row with Angel Haze found the singer enduring enormous press attention with media outlets clearly relishing two high profile newcomers locking horns.

However Perez Hilton’s intervention took the row in the new direction. Intervening, the blogger earned the wrath of Azealia Banks who called Hilton a “messy faggot” sparking an enormous online furor.

Azealia’s initial attempts to justify the use of the term by saying it not just about homosexuality might actually have some twisted logic and merit. This is, after all, a generation that is not hesitant to call a man a “bitch”, label a lame attempt “gay” or non-blacks “nigga”, but not everyone was buying it, especially not the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) who considered her explanation…well, gay.

According to Clash, GLAAD’s official response was, “Regardless of her intent or her personal definition, what matters is the meaning given to that word by those who hear it, and the damage it causes when they do. Undoubtedly there are gay kids who follow her on Twitter who hear this word in an entirely different context. This word is used almost universally by bullies, often as part of a larger verbal or physical assault. This word hurts those kids, no matter what Banks meant by it.”

Just last week, we at  Atlanta Black Star, reported that Miss Banks was intent on leaving the rap game because she considered it “unladylike”. Perhaps she should considered her own role in making it so the next time she is tempted to beef with anyone and sling invectives.

Interscope, however, denied they were dropping Azealia Banks because of the “F” slur flap with a brief statement when Complex asked. “No, she is still with us.”
