Nicki Minaj Admits Immigrant Status As She Talks About Families Being Ripped Apart

Amid criticism aimed at the Donald Trump administration for separating immigrant families at the Mexican-American border, Nicki Minaj has spoken out against it and disclosed her immigration status upon arriving to the U.S. 30 years ago.

“I came to this country as an illegal immigrant @ 5 years old,” she said on Instagram June 20. “I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place & having my parents stripped away from me at the age of 5. This is so scary to me. Please stop this. Can you try to imagine the terror & panic these kids feel right now? Not knowing if their parents are dead or alive, if they’ll ever see them again… 🇺🇸.”

Trump on yesterday signed an executive order intended to end separation of children and their parents by detaining them together for an indefinite period of time.

“We’re going to have strong — very strong — borders, but we are going to keep the families together,” Trump said as he signed the document in the Oval Office Wednesday. “I didn’t like the sight or the feeling of families being separated.”

But it doesn’t solve the issue of the more than 2,300 children who have already been split up from their families.

Meanwhile, fans of Nicki have been applauding her for sharing her own story and standing up for immigrants.

“I love you, Nicki. Thank you for standing up for what’s right ❤😭 @nickiminaj.”

“❗❗❗Thank you @nickiminaj – THIS IS AWFUL, INHUMANE, AND INEXCUSABLE. You are a true American and global citizen. 💚”

“@nickiminaj thank you for your support and knowing well where you come from. I am inspired by your bravery and humble journey to the U.S.”

Still, there was one person who called out the lack of support for the Black community in America.

“Sad, y’all care more about illegal immigrants (Hispanics) than Black folks (poor hungry Black families, poor Black kids struggling every day. Y’all make me sick. F— outta here.”
