Fresh off the opening for “A Wrinkle In Time,” Ava DuVernay is staying in the sci-fi/fantasy realm of movies as the director of DC’s “New Gods.”

The critically acclaimed filmmaker will head the film for Warner Bros., which will be separate from other DC films, according to a Thursday, March 15 report from Deadline. The deal follows DuVernay becoming the first Black woman to direct a live-action film with over a $100 million budget.

Aside from “Time,” DuVernay directing “New Gods” shouldn’t come as a surprise. Last year, she answered a Twitter question about her favorite superhero saying there were “many reasons” why Big Barda took the title.

Big Barda is one of the most powerful and beautiful women of the New Gods, which was created by comic icon Jack Kirby in 1971 soon after he left Marvel. “New Gods” premiered in a comic trilogy called “Fourth World” with “Forever People” and “Mister Miracle” rounding out the group.

After the world of classic mythology gods were destroyed during Ragnarok, the New Gods emerged. They live on the planets New Genesis, a paradise ruled by Highfather, and Apokolips, ruled by Darkseid, which comprises the worst parts of hell.
