Former students of Georgia’s Pike County Consolidated High School Class of 1969 received their diplomas almost 50 years later. At the all-black high school, several students peacefully protested in April of 1969 against what they deemed was racially discriminatory practices within the school district. It was enough for the superintendent at the time to deny them their diploma. Fast forward and 43 brave men and women returned to their alma mater for their official graduation ceremony. According to the AJC, 13 members passed before the ceremony.
One of the students Mildred Favors Dixon was at peace with their decision to protest nearly 50 years ago, “We had no regrets … because we made the right decision.”
