Oprah Didn’t Give a Housekeeper a Car But She Left the Next Best Thing

Ever the philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey couldn’t resist a generous moment during a hotel stay and she just knew the housekeeper who discovered her gift would be thrilled.

“People never leave money for the housekeepers in a hotel,” Winfrey told People magazine in her Monday, March 12 cover story. “So I always like to do nice things for the maids, for the housekeeping department. So this last time I was in the hotel, I usually just leave the money on the pillow. I thought, ‘What if it’s all over the room?’ And every time she picks up a thing, there’s another and there’s another and there’s another and there’s another.

“So I did that I did that all over the room. I put it under the desk, I put in the bathroom, I put it in the toilet paper I put it in the shower. … Imagine how happy that person was!”

The “A Wrinkle In Time” star has been very charitable throughout her career. Whether it’s giving a studio audience full of teachers a new car or shelling out millions for the Ron Clark Academy and the National African American History Museum.

“Nothing makes me happier than to see other people in their purest moments of joy,” she tells the publication. “Sometimes, honest to goodness, I’m just sitting around thinking, ‘What could I do to make somebody feel really good today?’ ” she says. “To be able to do that for somebody, that’s one of the great joys of my life.”
