In an unexpected showing, Beyoncé graced the 2017 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Show and Twitter users had a split response. The singer appeared to present political free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick with the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award.

“Thank you, Colin Kaepernick,” Bey says after being welcomed to the stage by “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah Tuesday, Dec. 5. “Thank you for your selfless heart, and your conviction. Thank you for your personal sacrifice. Colin took action with no fear of consequence or repercussion his only hope was to change the world for the better. To change perception, to change the way we treat each other, especially people of color.”

Bey took time to clear up the longstanding misconception that Kaepernick is anti-American because of his protest of the national anthem — which has continued in the 2017 NFL season.

“It’s been said that racism is so American that when we protest racism, some assume we’re protesting America,” she says. “So let’s be very clear: Colin has always been very respectful of the individuals who selflessly serve and protect our country and our communities and our families. His message is solely focused on social injustice for historically disenfranchised people.”

Once Kaepernick accepted the honor, he made it clear he would continue to stand up against Black oppression — whether he comes back to the league or not.

“I accept this award not for myself, but on behalf of the people,” he said. “Because if it were not for my love of the people, I would not have protested. And if it was not for the support from the people, I would not be on this stage today.

“With or without the NFL’s platform, I will continue to work for the people because my platform is the people,” Kaep said.

But as the BeyHive buzzed on the Twittersphere, most folks’ eyes were on the queen.

While haters made their feelings known…

Most, of course, were delighted that the “Flawless” singer showed up.
