Jamaica’s 2012 Olympic Women’s 400 Relay Team Moves Up to Silver After Russia Fails Drug Test

Jamaica’s 4x400m Women in London 2012 Olympics

Jamaica’s 4x400m women’s relay team has been upgraded from bronze to silver after Russia was stripped of the silver medals the country won at the London 2012 Olympics after Antonina Krivoshapka tested positive for a banned substance, the International Olympic Committee revealed on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

The United States won the gold medal in a world-leading and season-best time of 3:16.87. Ukraine, which finished fourth, will now get the bronze medal.

Jamaica, which was clocked at a season-best 3:20.95, was represented in the final by Christine Day, Rosemarie Whyte, Shericka Williams and Novlene Williams-Mills.

Krivoshapka was disqualified after dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol) was found when her sample was retested. Yulia Gushchina, Tatyana Firova and Natalya Antyukh will also forfeit the medals they won in London due to Krivoshapka’s failed test.

Gushchina had to give back the 4×100 relay gold and 4×400 silver medals she won at the 2008 Beijing Games, while Firova was part of the 4×400 team in China that was disqualified after Anastasia Kapachinskaya tested positive for a steroid.

Krivoshapka, who won relay gold at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, finished 6th in the 400-meter final at the London Games but that result will not stand.

The IOC also revealed that Turkish boxer Adem Kilicci, who was fifth in the 152-165-pound category, has been disqualified from the London Olympics after he tested positive for the same substance as Krivoshapka. Russian discus thrower Vera Ganeeva also tested positive for dehydrochloromethyltestosterone (turinabol).

Just a week ago, Jamaica’s global sprint star Usain Bolt lost one of his nine Olympic medals in a doping case involving teammate Nesta Carter. The IOC said Carter tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a banned stimulant, in re-analysis of samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Carter and Bolt were teammates on the winning 4×100-meter team, which set a world record of 37.10 seconds. Carter ran the opening leg and Bolt took the baton third in a team that also included Michael Frater and Asafa Powell.
