Latest #MannequinChallenge Replays Events of Police Brutality, But is Time for Blacks to Recreate a New Reality?

As the Mannequin Challenge continues to take the net by storm, Instagram user Simone Shepherd’s video may have taken home gold.

With its bold commentary on recent police-involved shootings of unarmed Black people, acts of police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, the video is a genuine work of art.

In the short clip, the sound of the Facebook live stream that captured Falcon Heights, Minnesota man Philando Castile’s last moments was recreated for viewers. Then, Sandra Bland’s traffic run-in that resulted in her death in a Texas jail and finally the 911 call from Trayvon Martin 2012 fatal encounter with George Zimmerman were also dramatized.

According to Shepherd’s Instagram this challenge post was part of her film project “Black in Blue” The Movie that puts a spotlight on racial injustices in the nation. Her team has also launched an indiegogo campaign to further spread their perspectives through art.
