22-Year-Old Ohio Man Could Spend 34 Years in Jail for Killing an Officer’s K-9

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, a 22-year-old Canton, Ohio man was sentenced to 34 years in prison for killing a K-9 officer during a robbery.

According to FOX 8 Cleveland, Kelontre Barefield was involved in a grocery store robbery in January when he shot the dog three times.

In the news clip, the dog’s handler returns fire and shoots the suspect in the leg.

The 3-year-old German shepherd, Jethro, died a day later.

As of last week, Barefield has been charged with one count of aggravated robbery with a firearm, one count of felonious assault on a police dog as well as other charges.

Barefield received a 34-year sentence for the January robbery and dog killing. However, he will serve an additional 11 years for a prior robbery.

Meanwhile, an Oklahoma sheriff’s deputy was fired after his K-9 officer died while in his care.

According to 9news.com, the sheriff left the dog inside his police vehicle on his days off. Sources stated the sheriff discovered the K-9 days later when he was heading back to work. He reportedly smelled the dead animal while on his way to court one morning.
