Christian Rapper Lecrae Still Fighting with Fans Who Want Him to Remain Silent on Race

After getting blasted by fans for a Fourth of July tweet about what enslaved Africans were doing on the date in 1776, Black Christian rapper Lecrae has found himself in the middle of another social media firestorm. This time, the outspoken star shared a lengthy message about #BlackLivesMatter on Instagram. The July 7 post was in response to Philando Castile’s death in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. The 32-year-old was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop when he reached for his wallet to hand over his license.

#philandocastile Arguments only prove my point. I will never stop. Justice. Side note the #AllLivesMatter hashtag is like spitting in the face of black folk. It comes off as extremely selfish and unsympathetic to a mourning person. Not because all lives don't matter. Of course they do. But it's very clear that black lives don't to many in this country. No one goes up to lung cancer patients and says "Folks with Breast cancer matter too!" #AllCancerPatients matter. That's Insensitive. True faith stands up for the oppressed and the broken. Obviously many can't see the systemic effects of racism and abused authority. Many can't see that racism has stained this country because they are privileged to not see it. Also Christians saying that " preaching the gospel is all we need" ignores how sin affects infrastructures and societal systems. They project blame on themselves when they see these kinds of posts. You assume my anger is at white people and not white supremacy. No there are many "woke" white folks out here. Allies and friends. But if you ever trusted in anything I've said, if you've used my words to stir your hope or joy, then trust that same voice now. Referring to his position as the father of a Black son – along with two other children – the artist says he will “never stop” sharing his point. After criticizing the #AllLivesMatter hashtag as being “extremely selfish,” Lecrae tears into Christians who say “preaching the gospel is all we need.”

“[It] ignores how sin affects infrastructures and societal systems. They project blame on themselves when they see these kinds of posts,” he wrote before taking aim at those who “assume my anger is at white people and not white supremacy.”

“No there are many ‘woke’ white folks out here. Allies and friends,” the rapper added. “But if you ever trusted in anything I’ve said, if you’ve used my words to stir your hope or joy, then trust that same voice now. This is an epidemic that school books or church services haven’t taught you.”

After telling fans he’ll still love them if they decide to unfollow, many have continued to take issue with #BlackLivesMatter, ignoring the problem with #AllLivesMatter.

User phser_man17 claimed only saying “Black lives matter” was racist.

Serena called Lecrae’s attitude “sad” and racist as well.

vic__junior called the post “ignorant and irresponsible,” claiming the police shooting was not a race issue.

But Caroline Faucette told the MC she supported him, saying she loved “how God is using you in this movement.”

@shadow_businessking blasted a fellow commenter who called Lecrae’s message satanic. He said Christians should “sympathize and support an equal and fair system for everyone.”

Cyrus criticized a user who called the rapper’s post “annoying,” pointing out how irritating police killing Black men and women is for the Black community.
