12-Year-old Boy Suspended from School for Defending Himself Against Bully: ‘It Is What It Is’

A mother is furious after her 12-year-old son was suspended from school for defending himself against a bully, WJZY reports. Kandis Malone pulled her son, Jaden Malone, out of the Invest Collegiate Charter School after the school gave him a 3-day suspension for shoving off a bully who repeatedly punched him in the head. The incident resulted in a concussion. Jaden says the boy pushed him to the ground and began punching him in the head when he attempted to walk away and tell a teacher. His mother complained to the school and calls the punishment unfair. Per WJZY, the director of the charter school said the state’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy also applies to students who defend themselves.

“School policies are school policies, North Carolina policies are zero tolerance. I hate it for the child but it is what it is,” the school’s director told the station.

The bully received 5 days out-of-school suspension. Jaden will not be returning to the charter school.
