50 cent has been back in the news this week after announcing that he’s leaving his longtime label Interscope along with collaborators Eminem and Dr. Dre. 50 followed up his announcement today with a new video for his track “The Funeral. As reported by vibe.com:

“50 Cent is not wasting a minute in his independent grind. Shortly after announcing his new deal with Caroline, Fif hits the Web with a new music video. Featuring 50, using one of his early flows, the words seem to flow like magic from the seasoned MC. Oh, and Tony Yayo is featured in the clip.”

50 Cent’s new video comes at a time where he’s trying to prove that he can stand on his own without the help of Interscope Music. 50’s relationship with the label has been rocky in recent years. After selling millions of records during the 00’s, 50 has not put a new album since 2009 due to creative differences with the label. According to theguardian.com:

“It’s quite possible that the rapper’s departure is a relief. Although he sold millions of albums for Interscope and Shady, including 15m copies of his debut, the rapper’s relationship with the labels seems to have disintegrated since 2009’s Before I Self Destruct, his least-successful LP. Its follow-up was endlessly delayed, with Fiddy complaining on Twitter and even threatening to leak an unreleased Dr Dre song. Despite these troubles, he admitted last month that he still owed Interscope one album.

“The rapper won’t be dealing with a label at all. His next records will be released purely with Caroline, a music distributor owned by Universal. This is a similar arrangement to the one used by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for The Heist, and Pet Shop Boys for last year’s LP Electric. ‘I have had great success to date with Shady/Aftermath/Interscope, and I’d like to thank Eminem and Dr Dre for giving me an incredible opportunity,” 50 Cent said. “I’ve learned so much from them through the years. I am excited to enter this new era where I can carry out my creative vision.'”

It will be interesting to see  if 50 Cent is able to recapture the popularity he once had with the backing of a major label. 50’s next album Animal Ambition is scheduled to be released on June 3.
