Say What? PlayStation 4 Won’t Play Blu-ray Discs or DVDs?

This holiday season will be a big one for video game players, as both Sony with the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft with the Xbox One are releasing new video game consoles. The Sony Playstation 4 has been the talk of the video gaming world, as it has more cool features and a starting price of $399, $100 cheaper than the upcoming Xbox One. However, someone at Sony seemingly dropped the ball on the new Playstation 4, because it won’t be able to play DVD’s or Blu-ray discs right out the box. According to theverge.com:

“When the PlayStation 4 launches on November 15th, there will be a software update already waiting for new owners — and that update is necessary to enjoy some of the console’s most basic functions. Chief among these features is the ability to play Blu-ray discs or DVDs, which won’t be possible until the update is installed. You also won’t be able to utilize Remote Play, which lets gamers play PS4 games on a PS Vita, while other missing features include the ability to play games as they’re being downloaded, recording and uploading gameplay using the console’s new sharing features, and being able to use voice chat while playing games with friends. Of course, these features will be available once you install the 300MB update, but for those looking to simply enjoy their shiny new PS4 straightaway, they’ll be in for a bit of a wait instead.”

Now of course since the update fixes this issue, it shouldn’t be a prohibitive factor to consumers who were anticipating purchasing a Playstation 4. However, it may come as a shock to some who are unaware of the issue and ignore the updates. Or worse yet, there may be gamers who don’t connect their PS4 to the Internet and may have no idea that an update is required.

Surely Sony will figure out a solution for its Play station 4 customers. Whoever made this glaring mistake probably won’t have a job this upcoming weekend.
