Racist Tweets Surge After Indian-American Wins Miss America Title

On Sunday night, Nina Davuluri became the first woman of Indian descent to snag the Miss America crown, but her victory was plagued by disappointing, disgusting and embarrassing racist tweets.

Has America become the country that truly forgot how it originated? The nation founded by immigrants was up in arms when an Indian-American woman, Miss New York, was crowned the winner of the 2014 Miss America Pageant.

“And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic,” one tweet read.

Another tweet read, “How the f*** does a foreigner win miss America? She is a Arab! #idiots.”

Ironically, the tweet did expose an idiot, but it certainly wasn’t the Miss America judges.

Davuluri is an American who just happens to be of Indian descent. Being Indian-American is no different from being African-American and in that sense if Davuluri isn’t American enough for these viewers, nobody else is American enough for the title either.

America has been crowned the “melting pot” of cultures because our roots here are diverse and come from a collection of people from different cultural backgrounds who migrated to a new land. In that case, the only cultural background that’s truly 100 percent American would be the Native Americans.

Another tweet that criticized the decision asked the question, “When will a white woman win #MISSAMERICA? Ever??!!”

Another tweet stated, “If you’re #Miss America you should have to be America.”

That would immediately disqualify nearly every contestant – included white ones.

It seems incredibly ironic that the country of immigrants has a problem with someone of mixed heritage being crowned Miss America.

Another tweet that revealed a major logical fallacy read, “The liberal Miss America judges won’t say this – but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values.”

Do not American values also boast that this country is the   land of promise from “sea to shining sea?” Does America not pride itself on its cultural diversity? Have we not as a nation consistently involved ourselves in countless wars overseas?

Seems a bit hypocritical that we can impose democracy on countries and essentially portray ourselves as the Superman of nations, only to treat the people from other cultures as if they are not good enough to even participate in our pageants.

The good news is that not all the Miss America tweets were riddled with racism.

“I think its amazing that @NinaDavuluri was crowned Miss America. This is the american story,” one user wrote.

Another said that they aren’t even going to click on the #MissAmerica hashtag because they could “do without a whole bunch of racism directed at brown people.”

Others claimed that the onslaught of racial tweets served as one of the country’s lowest points.

Simply put, it’s about time that the country full of foreigners and immigrants who are living on land that they stole from the Native Americans stop acting as if we are purebred Americans. In fact, we sent the real Americans walking down the Trail of Tears years ago or have we conveniently blocked out an essential period in American history?
