On The Verge: Earl Sweatshirt Performs ‘Burgundy’ on ‘Late Night’

Rapper Earl Sweatshirt has officially arrived. The Odd Future rapper has been gaining much buzz recently as he prepares to release his upcoming album, “Doris.” Earl recently released a new song “Burgundy,” produced by superstar producer Pharrell Williams. He made his network TV debut recently, performing the song on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” According to rollingstone.com:

“Backed by the Roots for the brief appearance, the [Earl Sweatshirt] performed the song ‘Burgundy,’ which surfaced just days before. The sense of alienation and discomfort projected in the track, which began in this version with the words ‘Grandma’s passing,’ was heightened by the footage of the rapper, dressed in a hoodie and shorts, walking through backstage corridors to reach the stage during the extended instrumental intro.”

The 19-year-old Earl Sweatshirt is known for emotional lyrics, as the west coast rapper represents a much younger demographic—but he’s now gaining mainstream attention and making the world take notice of his lyrical talents. As reported by vibe.com:

“Earl Sweatshirt gets things off his chest all awhile letting you into his personal headspace when he raps. His verses are more poignant storytelling then rappers twice his 19 years. The Odd Future spin-off spit some venom on the mike when making his solo television debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Friday (Aug. 10)”

“Burgundy” is the latest song from Earl Sweatshirt’s debut album “Doris,” which is set to release on August 20th. Check out the “Late Night” performance above, and the studio version below.
