Reign Supreme: Tracee Ellis Ross’ Insanely Fabulous Closet

Tracee Ellis Ross certainly fills the Norma Kamali heels that once belonged to her Supreme-ly chic mother – yes, the Diana Ross.

Ross ushered us into her home and spoiled us, giving us the grand tour. From her bountiful bookshelves filled with novels and vintage magazines to her meditation room, Ross shared it all before saving the best for last.

Can we talk about that closet for a sec? This is clearly a girl who has a true passion for the preservation (and organization) of clothing. And let’s just say her editorial experience and collecting mom’s hand-me-downs (be it high-waisted mom jeans or, you know, a hot pink ’80s Mugler blazer) is definitely an upside.

“I was spoiled when I worked in the magazine world. Fashion closets are heaven and I seem to model my organization after a fashion closet,” Ross said.

Each shoe was strategically arranged in an editor-approved fashion and, trust us, she knows exactly where everything came from; don’t even try to test her. “Open any of my drawers and you will think you are in a store,” she added.

“I go through phases: a ring phase, earring phase, no jewelry phase. But, I always love my gold ‘Tracee’ door-knockers. And I love, as you can tell, statement pieces.”

While some may call it hoarding (we like to think of it as collecting), Ross’ collection of vintage goods was by far one of the best we’ve ever seen. What’s old is new again, right? Plus, you got to give her props for her playful style. Dare we drop the “f” word? Fearless? And let us point out the fact that she doesn’t have a stylist.

While we played dress-up with Ross and watched as she expertly whipped her hair back and forth (those model days are far from behind her), we chatted about memorable red carpet moments.

Some highlights? A floor-length, fuchsia Alaïa drsss with Neil Lane jewels; a Gucci bondage dress to the Tom Ford fêted MET Ball; and a white long-sleeve Calvin Klein number to host a D.C. event with the president and first lady (cough, Barack and Michelle Obama, cough).

Fact: She totally repeated that last outfit to the carpet of Black Girls Rock, but, really can you blame her? Excuse the bad pun, but there really is Ain’t No Mountain High Enough for this Jill of all trades.
