Sloane Stephens has prevailed in three sets to become the only American to survive the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
On the same day that No. 1 seed Serena Williams was bounced from the tournament, Stephens was able to secure a victory over Monica Puig, making it the second time in the past three Grand Slam tournaments that she has advanced beyond Williams.
After the disappointment of getting knocked out of the competition early and failing to defend her title, Williams put her support behind her fellow American.
“I think Sloane has a really good chance of winning,” Williams said. “She has a great draw. I think she can take it. It would be really nice to see her win.”
