In the Midst of the Feminist Debate Ex Volleyball Star Says 'Wives should be submissive'

Gabrielle Reece isn’t having as bad a week as LL Cool J and Brad Paisley for their terrible attempt at igniting a conversation around race relations in America with “Accidental Racist” but she’s certainly stirring things up in the comment section with her latest interview. Reece, who was popular in the 90’s as a professional volleyball player and model, made two appearances between the “Today” show and “Rock Center With Brian Williams”. In the interviews, Reece revealed the secret to her 17-year marriage to former pro-surfer Laird Hamilton.

“I think the idea of living with a partner is ‘How can I make their life better?'” Reece told “Today’s” Natalie Morales. “So if I’m the woman and he’s the man, then yes, that’s the dynamic. I’m willing and I choose to serve my family and my husband because it creates a dynamic where he is then in fact acting more like a man and masculine and treating me the way I want to be treated.”

Reece was force to “clarify” her statement and wording in her memoir “My Foot Is Too Big For The Glass Slipper,” in which she claims, “to truly be feminine means being soft, receptive, and –- look out, here it comes –- submissive.”

She added to Natalie that being “submissive” isn’t a sign of weakness.

“I think because women have the ability to set the tone that the ultimate strength and showing real power, I believe, is creating that environment. I don’t think it’s a sign of weakness. I think it’s a sign of strength.”

Whether this bold position will help Reece’s memoir fly off the shelf will remain to be seen, for now she’s certainly added more flame to the fire of women issues and their quest for equality.
