Brett Ratner's Dwayne Johnson 'Hercules' Gets Summer Release Date

If you don’t see enough of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson this year,  you will certainly get another chance when the action movie star delivers his version of the son of Zeus in Brett Ratner’s Hercules: The Thracian Wars.

Paramount announced earlier this week, that Hercules will land into theaters on August 8, 2014.  Johnson will play the mythological hero known for his super strength and 12 epic adventures.

Several versions of the Hercules demigod character have made their way to the big screen, including Hercules (1997) Disney’s animated tale; Hercules (1983) starring Lou Ferrigno; and  Hercules in New York (1969) , which starred Arnold Schwarzeneggar. We’re hoping “The Rock” can pull off something bigger and better than what has been done before.

Ratner’s Hercules takes place after the hero has completed his 12 labors and becomes the leader of a group of bloodthirsty mercenaries. The King of Thrace hires Hercules and his small malitia to train his army, at which point they begin to realize how hallow their endless fighting has been.

The screenplay for the Paramount-MGM co-production film was written by Ryan Condal and based on the graphic novel, “Hercules: The Thracian Wars.”

Hercules release date places the film in line as one of the potential blockbusters to heat up Summer 2014.  The film hits theaters a week after Disney/Marvel’s The Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney moved Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty revision) to July 4th weekend, and Universal’s Jurassic Park IV stomps into theaters June 13.

Until then, Dwayne Johnson can be seen in several films this year, such as G.I Retaliation, Fast Six, Pain & Gain and Snitch.
