Gun Control Debate: Thousands Petition to Have Piers Morgan Deported

Petitions via the White House website’s “We the People” section have become a popular outlet for political opinions. President Barack Obama responded directly to hundreds of thousands of gun control advocates who made their voices heard through online petitions on Friday, but supporters of the Second Amendment have been supporting a different cause entirely. CNN host Piers Morgan has found himself the subject of a petition to have him deported for his criticism of the Second Amendment, which has earned more than 30,000 signatures.

Following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School earlier this month, Morgan has been increasingly outspoken on American gun laws. The British-born host is now being targeted for “his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and exploiting his position as a network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens,” according to the petition posted to “We the People” on Friday.

Morgan responded to the petition directly on his Twitter account, questioning the stance of the pro-gun petition. “Ironic U.S. gun rights campaign to deport me for ‘attacking 2nd Amendment rights’ – is my opinion not protected under 1st Amendment rights?” he posted on Sunday. “If I do get deported from America for wanting fewer gun murders, are there any other countries that will have me?”

The petition has reached its goal of 25,000 signatures by a large margin, with 38,752 on Monday. According to the “We the People” page, the White House requires 25,000 signatures for a response, but is not necessarily required to provide one. Responses in the past have varied from the White House’s own beer recipe, to the administration’s approach to Wall Street reforms. Of course, the likelihood of having Piers Morgan deported is laughable, and at the very least, Morgan gets the joke.

“If America deports me, I’m thinking of anchoring my CNN show from Jamaica– got a spare room @henrygayle @usainbolt?” he asked on Twitter.
