Tom Hardy to Star in 'Splinter Cell' Adaptation

The now-household name of Tom Hardy will once again be satisfying filmgoers and fanboys alike. This time he’ll showcasing his talent in an upcoming Splinter Cell adaptation, according to a recent article from Collider.

Tom Hardy, who has come to be known for his roles in Inception, Warrior, and The Dark Knight Rises, will be taking on the lead role in the first of possibly many films based on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series. The video-game series has already spawned 7 sequels, giving any movie studio that’s willing plenty of material to work with. Eric Singer, writer of 2009’s slightly sub-par thriller The International, has already adapted a screenplay based on the popular franchise.

Jean-Julien Baronnet, Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO, had nothing but praise for Tom Hardy’s selection in a recent statement:

“Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills. His involvement in the ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. Meanwhile, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and … we’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story … while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.”

Tom Hardy has become quite busy lately. He’s been in three 2012 projects alone, ranging from the camp This Means War to the thrillingly violent yet dramatic Lawless. Of course, it goes without saying that his performance in the latest Batman film is quite memorable as well. He’s currently filming Mad Max: Fury Road and rumored to play George Mallory in a 2014 project known only as Everest.

It’s hard to find fault in Tom Hardy’s selection. He does seem to be quite the talent while still maintaining a tough guy image. One only needs to look as far as the independent 2008 drama Bronson to see Hardy’s full range of abilities. Hopefully, he doesn’t go the route of others who have been similarly slated (see: Jason Statham). We’ll be sure to update you as more information emerges.
