Here is the first look at Angela Bassett and Mary J. Blige in the upcoming Lifetime original film Betty And Coretta.
Bassett posted the picture on her Facebook fan page this afternoon, with a message which read: Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett in an exclusive set photo as “Betty and Coretta.” Film premieres February 2013 on Lifetime!
The Hollywood actress will play Coretta Scott King opposite Mary J. Blige, who co-stars as Betty Shabazz in the film which was previously named Parallel Lives.
Betty And Coretta centers on the relationship between Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King. With the story emphasizing how they carried on as single mothers following the assassinations of their husbands, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
Although Bassett played Shabazz in the 1992 Spike Lee film Malcolm X, opposite Denzel Washington, who was the lead, I believe she would make a better Shabazz than Blidge. It’s something about seeing her in that role before which is just so soothing. As far as Bildge, I would have to say that we’re a little skeptical about her playing King. Whenever there is a relatively untrained actor playing a real figure, the captivation has to be on point, and I’m not sure Mary could bring it. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
