'The Avengers' Passes The $1.5 Billion Mark…

The Avengers has reach a major milestone. The hit film has become the third movie in history to hit the $1.5 billion mark at the worldwide box office.

The Disney and Marvel Studio’s movie hit the mark today, thanks to a re-release and an aggressive Labor Day push. Disney raised The Avengers domestic theater count to 1,700 on Friday, to accommodate the holiday weekend. The action film originally open in early May, but was re-released to help boost more sales, which is apparently working.

The Avengers is already the No. 3 film of all time behind Titanic ($2.2 billion) and Avatar ($2.8 billion), which were both from legendary filmmaker James Cameron. While holding on to its number three position on the worldwide box office list, The Avengers made another $1.7 million over this holiday weekend, which upped the film’s U.S. box office total to $619.5 million.

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, and Chris Evans as Captain America.

Joss Whedon directed The Avengers.
