Eve: Besides Nicki Minaj, Where Are The Female Rappers?

Rapper/actress Eve bemoaned the lack of female MC’s currently making waves in hip hop during an interview with MTV.

There once was a time when female MC’s were given an opportunity to share the stage with their male counterparts, as the former first lady of Ruff Ryders can attest. Rappers like Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, Da Brat and several other MC’s were all able to make a name for themselves in the mainstream music scene.

Today’s female hip-hop scene is quite different; Nicki Minaj reigns supreme while most other female MC’s fall into the category of irrelevant.

“It sucks cause it’s lacking. It really is, you know?” Eve said to MTV during the Essence Music festival earlier this month. “I mean, there are some dope females. Nicki is definitely holding it down. … Then obviously there are some dope females that are coming up. But I feel like when I was out and Missy [Elliott] was out, Kim, whatever, it was kind of shared in a sense and it’s not like that right now.”

That sense of sharing led to one of the biggest hits in the history of female hip-hop.

Lil Kim, who earned her “Queen B” nickname with her ferocious flow and close relationship with Notorious B.I.G., called up Hot 97 radio host Angie Martinez, Missy Elliot, Da Brat and Left Eye to remix her single “Not Tonight”.

Chances are slim that Lil Kim would extend the same olive branch to Minaj, who she has continued to diss despite the fact Minaj constantly named her as an inspiration  as she came up in the mixtape circuit.

When asked about the possibility of another record similar to Ladies Night squashing the beef between the two New York MC’s, Eve said, “It’s a good business move so, yeah, it’d be a dope record. But will it happen? Who knows?”
