Freida Pinto Stands Up For Women Empowerment In Developing Countries

Actress and activist Freida Pinto has signed up as a global ambassador for Plan International USA’s Because I am a Girl initiative. The organization’s primary objectives are to set up sustainable projects in developing countries giving young females access to facilities such as clean water, food and education.

The Slumdog Millionaire visited Sierra Leone last month (Jun12), and her perspective on life changed with a new determination to help bring about change.

She says, “I have always been a true believer in the power of every individual, especially every girl. Last month, I had the amazing opportunity to travel with Plan (sic) to Sierra Leone and see firsthand how investing in a girl transforms an entire community.

“The treacherous web of barriers girls face worldwide is endless. But if we educate and empower girls, they will reach their fullest potential, pulling themselves and their families out of poverty.

“I am truly inspired by the determination and courage of the girls I’ve met. I’m so excited to be working with Plan (sic) to bring about real change for these for girls and their families. When you invest in a girl, you really can change the world.”

How awesome! Meanwhile Frieda’s new film “Trishna” is the rave around town. IMDB summarizes the film as “..the story of the tragic relationship between the son of a property developer and the daughter of an auto rickshaw owner.” Frieda plays the character of the daughter. She described the film to the New Daily News

“I guess the journey is very beautiful and at the same time very tragic… because it goes from being really innocent to being in a situation of almost desperation and finally to redemption. It’s quite an intense journey for one girl to go through.”
