David Ortiz Blasts Career Home Run No. 400

Remember the start of last season, when David Ortiz struggled at the plate and many Boston Red Sox fans considered him done? Well, think again.

Ortiz not only came out of that slump, but the beloved “Big Poppi” continues to tear the cover off the baseball. And today, with a fourth-inning solo home run against the Oakland A’s, Ortiz became only the 49th player in baseball history to hit 400 home runs in a career.

The left-handed swinging Ortiz is the eighth active player with 400 or more home runs and the first to reach the mark since Paul Konerko joined the club in April, also achieving the milestone against Oakland.

Ortiz is the sixth player to hit his 400th homer in a Red Sox uniform and first since former teammate Manny Ramirez hit the mark in 2005.

The homer was Ortiz’s first since June 27. He went 25 at-bats without a homer before joining the 400 club.

A’s right-hander A.J. Griffinbecame the 273rd pitcher to surrender a home run to Ortiz, who hit his eighth career homer in.
