Veteran supermodel Naomi Campbell is featured inside the July issue of W magazine while newcomer Joan Smalls lands the cover. Note we’re only calling Joan a newcomer in comparison to Naomi’s years in the industry. Over the last couple years however Joan has taken fashion by storm! She reveals to the magazine that it wasn’t until 2010 that high-fashion designers began looking her way,
“When I first started it never picked up for me, doing shows.” But after Riccardo booked her for Givenchy in 2010, she says, “He saw my potential. And it changed people’s perspective.”
Joan has since taken off but she still believes she has something to prove,
“I just have something to prove…I know I’m representing a group—black, Latin, whatever you want to put me with—and I want to show that they are beautiful the way they are. I think that’s really important for our youth to see. Fashion is part of our culture…And it’s about more than just a pretty dress.”
