Nigeria Fires 788 Striking Doctors, Only to Hire Them Back

Lagos State Governor Babtunde Raji Fashola announced Thursday that the 788 doctors fired during a strike three weeks ago would be rehired. Lagos, home to more than 17 million Nigerians, has the highest population of the Nigerian states, and the firings affected the majority of the physicians working in the state’s hospitals, who had been protesting their low wages. The state’s facilities were quickly overrun and could not cope with the amount of patients, while the doctors sued the government over the firings.
