Tia Mowry Leaves ‘The Game’; Will It Stay Afloat?

Actress Tia Mowry put an end to speculation, confirming that she will not be returning to the BET Network for The Game’s sixth season. Mowry used her personal twitter account to detail why she chose to leave: “I am looking forward to [focusing on] my upcoming projects…”

Moving beyond the comical, quirky, and gullible character traits of her former role on Sister Sister, Mowry stars in The Game as Dr. Melanie Barnette-Davis, a lovable and supportive wife to on-screen husband Derwin (Pooch Hall). Mowry has maintained her leading role on The Game since its premiere in October 2006. Serving as the only new comedy series chosen for CW’s primetime schedule, The Game ran for three seasons before its cancellation in May 2009.

BET capitalized on the show’s success and struck a deal with The Game’s parent company, CBS, to develop new shows for a fourth season. On January 11, 2011 The Game returned to the small screen with 7.7 million viewers, a record for the BET Network.

A fifth season followed with just enough melodrama and heart-wrenching scenarios to keep devoted viewers entertained. But new writers, additional characters, and a change in studio location resulted in a drop in the show’s average ratings. With such a dramatic shift in direction, will the The Game remain afloat for its sixth scheduled season?

Unfortunately, Tia Mowry won’t be on set to provide an answer to this question. Mowry’s new projects consist of a reality television show, an ABC Family movie, as well as promoting her new parenting book, Oh Baby: Pregnancy Tales and Advice from One Hot Momma to the Next.
